Many tribal communities experience high rates of food insecurity, or a lack of reliable access to enough affordable, nutritious food. The COVID-19 pandemic has only amplified this issue. Studies have shown that approximately 25 percent of American Indians and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people face food insecurity, and this rate is even higher in rural communities. Tribal food sovereignty offers a path toward increased food security, greater financial stability, and economic opportunity.
On September 7, 2024, the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, & Nutrition (PCSFN), along with the National Fitness Foundation, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Health, the National Park Service Office of Public Health, and lacrosse leaders from across the country will co-host the One Lacrosse Gathering Celebration on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The gathering will honor the sport of lacrosse by highlighting the game’s origins in America’s Native communities — and celebrate America's first games, first foods, and the meaningful intersection of cultural traditions, food, and health through outreach and collaboration.

As an adjunct to the One Lacrosse Gathering Celebration, this Tribal Resource Hub highlights federal resources designed to address food insecurity, advance food sovereignty, and promote physical activity within tribal communities. The Tribal Resource Hub offers resources for anyone who works to support the health and well-being of tribal communities — including public health professionals, community health educators, tribal community leaders, researchers, school administrators, and child and elder care providers.
The Hub features resources from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and several agencies within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), including:
- Administration for Community Living (ACL)
- Administration for Children and Families (ACF)
- Indian Health Service (IHS)
- National Institutes of Health (NIH)
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
- Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)
- Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
