Executive Summary

Infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship (IP&AS) are essential to preventing and controlling infections, and to ensuring the prudent use of antibiotics. This report presents a set of key strategies to enhance IP&AS in human and animal health settings. The report identifies a number of gaps in IP&AS practices, including: lack of awareness of the importance of IP&AS among healthcare providers and animal health professionals, inadequate resources to implement IP&AS programs, and lack of coordination between human and animal health sectors. The report makes a number of recommendations to address these gaps, focused on improving federal support, implementation strategies, supporting science-based research, expanding the workforce and increasing IP&AS education and competencies. The effective and efficient implementation of IP&AS in a wide variety of settings would ultimately drive the growth and maintenance of a workforce with robust education and competencies at multiple levels to carry out the needed work to combat antibiotic-resistant infections and promote antibiotic stewardship.
