Executive Summary

In a letter addressed to Secretary Azar, the PACCARB expresses deep concern that the gains made in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the previous budget cycle may not be sustained and that new programs may not achieve their intended results if funding is diverted. To address these concerns, the PACCARB proposes two key actions. First, maintaining or increasing funding for the CDC's Antibiotic Resistance Solutions Initiative and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality healthcare-associated infection and antibiotic-resistance programs. Second, they stress the importance of continued funding for AMR research in agriculture provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, recommending the allocation of specific funds for AMR projects within the broader Sustainable Agriculture Systems program and maintaining or exceeding the funding levels dedicated to AMR research in 2017. The PACCARB underscores the urgency of preserving and expanding funding to address antibiotic resistance and urges Secretary Azar's support in safeguarding the nation's health across human, animal, and environmental domains in the face of this pressing public health threat.

This report was compiled by the Immediate Action Subcommittee, and was voted on and approved by the full council at the 8th PACCARB Public Meeting on March 2, 2018.
