Dr. Kwon is an infectious diseases physician and healthcare epidemiologist with expertise in antimicrobial resistance and infection prevention. In addition to her medical training, she completed a two-year fellowship with the National Academy of Medicine focused on public health. The Kwon Lab conducts clinical and translational research focused on combatting antimicrobial resistance funded by the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and multiple not-for-profit foundations. Dr. Kwon has experience in the surveillance of antimicrobial resistance infections, assessment of antimicrobial effectiveness, education for healthcare personnel and the public, and implementation of methods to prevent the transmission of antimicrobial resistance. Major areas of expertise and contributions to literature include the identification of healthcare environmental reservoirs for antimicrobial resistance and directly linking them to HAIs, and characterizing that short, oral course of antimicrobials can lead to “antibiotic scarring” and the development of antimicrobial resistance in the gut microbiome in healthy people.
As the Section Head of Hospital Epidemiology & Antimicrobial Stewardship and as the Medical Director of Infection Prevention at Washington University in St. Louis, she is responsible for the curation an implementation of strategies to combat antimicrobial resistance and prevent healthcare-associated infections. Dr. Kwon also serves on multiple national committees including with the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA).
