Claire R. Burbick, DVM, PhD Diplomate, ACVM; Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology, Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, Washington State University; Pullman, WA
As an American College of Veterinary Microbiologists board-certified veterinarian, Dr. Burbick is uniquely positioned to address, and passionate about, issues related to antimicrobial resistance, use and stewardship. Over the past 8 years she has become more involved in veterinary antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) interpretation, recommendations on use and the profound challenges the veterinary profession have regarding appropriate antimicrobial use. This has been primarily though volunteer service on for the Veterinary Antimicrobial Susceptibility Test Subcommittee (VAST) under the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), as well as participation in AMR surveillance programs under the auspices of the USDA and FDA.
Dr. Burbick currently supervises the bacteriology lab at the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory performing culture and AST for companion and agricultural animals as well as for terrestrial and aquatic wildlife. This diversity has provided daily frustration at the lack of data surrounding clinical efficacy and appropriate use in most veterinary species, and how little attention this very important component of antimicrobial use attracts. By participating in PACCARB, she hopes to bring her laboratory and veterinary experience to highlight these critical gaps to the larger medical community.
