November National Health Observances: Diabetes, COPD, and Antibiotic Resistance

Each month we feature select National Health Observances (NHOs) that highlight important health issues that affect people across the United States. In November, we’re raising awareness about diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and antibiotic resistance.

To make it easy for you to promote these NHOs within your networks, we’ve pulled together some resources that you can use to spread the word. Join us as we advocate for better health nationwide!

  • American Diabetes Month
The American Diabetes Association promotes American Diabetes Month in November to raise awareness about diabetes. Check out and share these resources from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Diabetes Prevention Program, that works to prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. It’s also a great time to explore the Healthy People 2030 Diabetes objectives, which aim to reduce the burden of diabetes and improve the lives of people who are living with or at risk for the condition. Finally, be sure to share our consumer friendly MyHealthfinder diabetes resources.

  • National COPD Awareness Month
Every year, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) uses the month of November to recognize COPD, a long-term lung disease that affects millions of Americans. Get involved by sharing these NHLBI resources on your platforms to bring greater attention to this disease. You can also share our MyHealthfinder resources to encourage people to quit smoking and lower their risk of developing COPD. Lastly, use Healthy People 2030 to track national progress towards objectives to improve respiratory health

  • U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week (11/18 – 11/24)
From November 18 to 24, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) celebrates U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week – an annual observance that raises awareness of the threat of antibiotic resistance and the importance of appropriate antibiotic use. Use CDC’s Be Antibiotics Aware Partner Toolkit to spread the word about the importance of appropriate antibiotic use. Check out our video-simulation training program, Partnering to Heal, to learn about best practices on infection control for healthcare professionals.

We hope we’ve made it easy for you to promote these NHO resources with your networks. Together, we can take steps to improve the nation’s health!
