Each month we feature select National Health Observances (NHOs) that align with our priorities for improving health across the nation. In March we’re raising awareness about colorectal cancer, kidney disease, nutrition, and tuberculosis.
We’ve pulled together some resources that you can use to spread the word about these NHOs below. We hope you’ll join the conversation and help us advocate for better health nationwide!
- National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month
The Prevent Cancer Foundation sponsors National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March as a time to promote awareness of the importance of colorectal cancer screening, prevention, and treatment. Use our easy-to-understand MyHealthfinder resource to encourage people to get tested for colorectal cancer — and to find out which test they might prefer. If you’re interested in national efforts to reduce new cases of cancer and cancer-related deaths, be sure to review the Healthy People 2030 Cancer objectives. And check out the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Screen for Life: National Colorectal Cancer Action Campaign, which is dedicated to informing people about the importance of regular colorectal cancer screening for people who are 45 years old or older.
- National Kidney Month
The National Kidney Foundation sponsors National Kidney Month in March to promote kidney awareness, prevention, and treatment. Help people in your community build paths to better kidney care using this promotional toolkit from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). And learn about NIDDK’s research efforts to change the way we understand, treat, and prevent kidney disease. Don’t forget to check out the Healthy People 2030 Chronic Kidney Disease topic for information on national objectives aimed at reducing chronic kidney disease and related complications.
- National Nutrition Month®
Every year the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics celebrates National Nutrition Month® — a time to help people develop healthy eating habits. You can use our MyHealthfinder nutrition resources to encourage people to make healthy food choices. Review the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020–2025 — and share the related consumer and professional resources with your community and networks. Finally, explore the Healthy People 2030 Nutrition and Healthy Eating objectives to learn about national efforts to improve health by promoting healthy eating and making nutritious food available.
- National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
On March 10 the Office on Women’s Health (OWH) recognizes National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD) to raise awareness about the impact of HIV and AIDS on women and girls and show support for those at risk of and living with HIV. You can promote this NHO using resources from OWH’s social media toolkit and by sharing these NWGHAAD fact sheets. You can also share MyHealthfinder’s resources on getting tested for HIV and talking to the doctor about HIV testing. And for information on national efforts to address HIV prevention and treatment, be sure to review Healthy People 2030 objectives related to HIV and other STIs.
- World Tuberculosis Day
Sponsored by the World Health Organization, World Tuberculosis Day on March 24 is an annual observance to raise public awareness about the health, social, and economic consequences of tuberculosis. Use this digital toolkit from the CDC to educate the public about the impact of TB in the United States. You can also share our MyHealthfinder resource on latent tuberculosis to encourage people to talk to their doctor about getting tested. And check out the Healthy People 2030 Infectious Disease topic to learn about national efforts to reduce cases of diseases like tuberculosis.
We hope you’ll use these resources to promote important NHOs on your channels. Together, we can work toward a healthier nation.
