Each month we feature select National Health Observances (NHOs) that align with our priorities for improving health across the nation. In September we’re raising awareness about healthy aging, food safety, childhood obesity, and substance use recovery.
To make it easy for you to help spread the word, we’ve pulled together some resources that you can use to promote these NHOs below. We hope you’ll join the conversation and help us advocate for better health nationwide!
- Healthy Aging Month
Each September we recognize Healthy Aging Month as a time to focus national attention on the health and well-being of older adults. Use our easy-to-understand MyHealthfinder resource to encourage adults to protect their health as they grow older. If you’re interested in national efforts to improve health for older adults, check out the Healthy People 2030 Older Adults objectives. And be sure to register to attend the free virtual 2021 Healthy Aging Symposium taking place on September 8 and 9 to learn about the latest science, best practices, and innovative solutions to improve health and well-being for older Americans! - National Food Safety and Education Month
The Partnership for Food Safety Education (PFSE) sponsors National Food Safety and Education Month each September to promote food safety best practices. Encourage people in your community to practice food safety by sharing PFSE’s free downloadable recipes with food safety and hand hygiene steps. And be sure to check out the Healthy People 2030 Foodborne Illness topic for information on objectives aimed at reducing foodborne illnesses.
- National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
Sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month is a time to promote healthy growth in children. For guidance on healthy eating, check out the latest edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans — and share the related resources for consumers. You can also share our MyHealthfinder resource for parents on helping kids stay at a healthy weight. And don’t forget to explore the Healthy People 2030 objectives related to children’s health and overweight and obesity.
- National Recovery Month
Every year the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) celebrates people in recovery from substance use disorders during National Recovery Month. Use our resource to encourage parents to talk to their kids about tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. You can also share our MyHealthfinder resources to encourage people to talk to loved ones about alcohol misuse and drug misuse. And check out the Healthy People 2030 Drug and Alcohol Use topic to learn about efforts to reduce misuse of drugs and alcohol.
