Summary
Children who are better at math are more likely to do well in school, which is linked to better health outcomes. Significant disparities in math skills exist in 4th-graders by race/ethnicity, school type, and eligibility for the National School Lunch Program. Evidence shows that many interventions, including programs outside school hours, are effective at helping children develop math skills.
