Summary

The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) collects data on adults’ health-related risk behaviors, chronic health conditions, and use of preventive services. LGBT people have specific health-related challenges and disparities — and accurate data is key to identifying how to meet their health needs. But many states don’t include questions about sexual orientation and gender identity in the BRFSS. Getting more states to ask questions on sexual orientation and gender identity in the BRFSS can help inform effective health promotion strategies for LGBT people.
