CPE Credit Now Available for Pharmacists!

Pharmacists play an important role in helping to prevent adverse drug events (ADEs) related to opioids. That’s why ODPHP has partnered with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) to offer free continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit for Pathways to Safer Opioid Use, our interactive training on the safe use of opioids to manage chronic pain.

Founded in 1852, APhA is the largest association of pharmacists in the United States, with more than 62,000 practicing pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists, pharmacy students, and pharmacy technicians as members. APhA members are recognized as essential in all patient care settings for optimal medication use that improves health, wellness, and quality of life.

Pathways to Safer Opioid Use is based on the opioid-related recommendations outlined in the National Action Plan for Adverse Drug Event Prevention. The ADE Action Plan specifically recommends that federal agencies explore ways to improve uptake of evidence-based strategies for safe opioid prescribing, including training various health care providers.

After completing this training, participants will be able to:

  • Apply health literacy strategies to help patients understand how to prevent opioid-related ADEs
  • Identify risk factors, opioid medications, and interactions that increase people’s risk for opioid-related ADEs
  • Use a multidisciplinary, team-based approach to treating patients with chronic pain
  • Combine the principles of the Health Literate Care Model and biopsychosocial model of chronic pain management through case study examples
