Session: F-18A: 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans: A Preview

Time: 1:00 – 1:50 pm

Presenters: Katrina Piercy, PhD, RD, ACSM-CEP, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; David Buchner, MD, MPH, FACSM, 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee; and Ken Powell, MD, MPH, FACSM, Co-Chair, 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee

Session Description:  The session will start with a walk through of the steps leading to the next edition of the Guidelines, from the Advisory Committee’s work and analysis of its systematic literature review, and the role of the federal government in developing and disseminating the Guidelines. Next will be a discussion of how the 2008 Guidelines and the State of the Science meeting at ACSM in 2014 informed the creation of subcommittees in the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee and questions to address. The last discussion will be led by the current co-chair of the Advisory Committee who will discuss the work of the subcommittees and focus areas.

Session Description: Two poster presentations highlighting the work of the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee.

  • Evaluating the Science for Physical Activity Policy (Vaux-Bjerke): this poster highlights the systematic literature review process being utilized by the Advisory Committee, including examples from the search strategy and sources of evidence used
  • Updating the Physical Activity Guidelines For Americans: Priority Topics and Research-Related Issues (Bhutiani): this poster highlights the first questions under review by the Advisory Committee, the novel topic areas being evaluated by the subcommittees, and an overview of the cross-cutting issues workgroups (fitness, pregnancy, and the young adult transition)
