In this Cochrane systematic review, the Cochrane Collaborative found that acamprosate seems to be effective and safe for treating people with alcohol dependence after detoxification from alcohol. Researchers found that, compared with placebo, when acamprosate is added to psychosocial treatment strategies, it reduces the risk that people will start drinking again after they detoxify.
