Exploring the Landscape of Food Is Medicine

The nation’s investment in health care spending, at greater than $4 trillion in 2020, needs to be accompanied by longer-term investments that address the upstream causes of poor health outcomes. Resources provided through the Fiscal Year 2023 Omnibus Appropriations Bill allow for the opportunity to set a unifying foundation that supports advancement across the Food Is Medicine landscape.

The fast-moving pace of Food Is Medicine and the increased number of participating systems and stakeholders have signaled a demand to ensure federal departments use consistent definitions, rationale, and guidelines to collaboratively build lasting, high-value FIM models.

This overview provides foundational framing elements central to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) perspective on Food Is Medicine and the current landscape of the movement across the United States.
