The 2018 Healthy Aging Summit: Plenary Panels

This week, we’re sharing details about the Plenary Panels — below you’ll find speakers and topics for each session. You can also view the full schedule online to see all the events we have in store!

Day 1

10:15 a.m.: Plenary Panel: Leadership in Healthy Aging

Lance Robertson, MPA, Administrator and Assistant Secretary for Aging at the Administration for Community Living (ACL), will discuss how ACL works to:

  • Maximize the health, well-being, and independence of older adults and people with disabilities across the lifespan
  • Support families and caregivers
  • Reach out to underserved communities

Eliseo Perez-Stable, MD, Director of the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), will discuss how NIMHD works to improve health outcomes and quality of life for older Americans by addressing the social determinants of health.

Susan Reinhard, RN, PhD, FAAN, Senior Vice President and Director of the AARP Public Policy Institute and Chief Strategist of the Center to Champion Nursing in America, will discuss:

  • AARP’s efforts to enhance healthy aging by improving health care systems
  • New programs and initiatives to reach underserved communities

Susan Dentzer, President and CEO of the Network for Excellence in Health Innovation (NEHI), will moderate the discussion.

11:15 a.m.: Plenary Panel: Brain Health

Melinda Kelley, PhD, Director of the Office of Legislation, Policy, and International Activities at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) will discuss:

  • NIA’s sponsorship of a study to determine the effectiveness of Alzheimer’s disease prevention strategies
  • How the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) conducted the 2-part study
  • Recommendations and possibilities for future research

Molly Wagster, PhD, Chief of the Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience Branch at NIA’s Division of Neuroscience, will discuss:

  • Research recommendations and gaps from the AHRQ and NASEM study and from the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Cognitive Aging Study
  • NIA’s efforts to address these research needs

Lisa McGuire, PhD, Lead of the Alzheimer’s Disease and Healthy Aging Program at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will showcase the Healthy Brain Initiative’s road map to engaging communities and public health leaders.

Day 2

9:00 a.m.: Plenary Panel: Leveraging Technology and International Examples to Age in Place

Ken Smith, MS, Senior Research Scholar and Mobility Director of the Stanford Center on Longevity, will discuss:

  • The shift in wearable technology from measuring activities to measuring physiological responses
  • The benefits of this change for the older adult population

Alexandre Kalache, MD, PhD, Co-President of the International Longevity Centre (ILC) Global Alliance, will discuss how ILC-Brazil works to meet the needs of a rapidly aging population.

Enrique Vega, MD, Director of the Aging Program at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), will discuss how Latin American countries work to implement evidence-based programs from ACL and the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities.

Colin Milner, CEO of the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA), will moderate the discussion.

4:00 p.m.: Closing Plenary: Age-Friendly Public Health Systems

Terry Fulmer, PhD, RN, FAAN, President of The John A. Hartford Foundation (JAHF), will discuss:

  • JAHF’s recent work piloting a model for developing Age-Friendly Public Health Systems
  • Lessons learned for diverse partners and stakeholders in the community
  • Why everyone has a role in developing age-friendly environments, communities, and health systems
