STORY FROM THE FIELD: Tu Casa’s Safe Dates and Colorado’s Sexual Violence Prevention Program

A new story on injury and violence prevention from Healthy People 2020’s Who’s Leading the Leading Health Indicators? monthly bulletin shows how Tu Casa’s Safe Dates, an adolescent dating abuse prevention program that raises awareness of healthy and abusive dating relationships, equips students with skills and resources to develop healthy dating relationships, including positive communication, anger management, and conflict resolution. This evidence-based program, funded through the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s (CDPHE) Sexual Violence Prevention Program and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Rape Prevention Education program, resulted in statistically significant positive changes among students for the following measures: life skills; rejection of antisocial, delinquent, and violent behavior; and rejection of jealous behavior. Healthy People 2020, a federal policy initiative that establishes national public health objectives with 10-year targets and monitors progress over time in meeting those targets, includes several objectives under the topic of Injury and Violence aimed at preventing unintentional injuries and violence, and reduce their consequences.
