The Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee is composed of 17 nationally recognized experts in the fields of physical activity and health. Today, we are highlighting Dr. Kirk Erickson, Associate Professor in the Departments of Psychology and Geriatric Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. On the Committee, Dr. Erickson serves as chair of the Brain Health Subcommittee and is a member of the Aging Subcommittee.
For parents, keeping tabs on their children’s eating and physical activity habits can be especially hard once the kids head back to school. Health professionals can encourage parents to model healthy behaviors their children may follow when they are away from home. The Weight-Control Information Network at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases shares tips on how parents can promote healthy behaviors during the back-to-school season and beyond.

Dr. King serves as Co-Chair, along with Dr. Ken Powell, of the Committee, as well as Chair of the Promotion of Physical Activity Subcommittee, and a member of the Aging Subcommittee.
For many Americans, meeting the daily physical activity recommendations can be a challenge. Between work, family and everyday responsibilities, it can be difficult to find the time to put personal health and wellness needs first. Local park and recreation agencies can offer a solution to that challenge. In fact, people who use parks and open spaces are three times more likely to achieve the recommended levels of physical activity than nonusers.

For people with disabilities, discovering the power of play starts with access, opportunity, and inclusion. Through organized efforts to create opportunities for people with disabilities, we can address health disparities that lead to physical inactivity.

On the Committee, Dr. Whitt Glover is a member of the Promotion of Physical Activity and Youth Subcommittees.

Today, we are highlighting Dr. John Jakicic, a professor in the Department of Health and Physical Activity and Director of the Physical Activity and Weight Management Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh. On the Committee, Dr. Jakicic is the chair of the Cardiometabolic Health and Weight Management Subcommittee and is a member of the Exposure, Promotion of Physical Activity, and Sedentary Behavior Subcommittees.
