Adverse drug events (ADEs) are injuries caused by medical interventions related to a pharmaceutical drug. They include medication errors, adverse drug reactions, allergic reactions, and overdoses. Two out of 3 ADEs are related to 3 specific types of drugs: opioids, anticoagulants, and diabetes agents.
ADEs are a significant cause of injury to patients. In inpatient settings, they affect about 2 million hospital stays each year. They’re also responsible for an annual 3.5 million visits to the doctor.
Recently, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services approved new measures for tracking ADEs, which include 2020 target goals for reducing ADEs. Implementation of these measures is based on the National Action Plan for Adverse Drug Event Prevention (ADE Action Plan).
