Meeting Summaries

During the events listed below, subject matter experts and prevention stakeholders met to review progress, increase collaboration, and discuss future steps for implementing the national action plans to prevent adverse drug events (ADEs) and health care-associated infections (HAIs).


ADE Prevention: 2014 Action Plan Conference

October 30, 2014 in Washington, D.C.

This conference brought together ADE subject matter experts and ADE prevention stakeholders to coordinate and collaborate in the HHS initiative to reduce preventable ADEs, share evidence-based practices and strategies that advance the goals of the National Action Plan for Adverse Drug Event Prevention, and discuss the potential measures outlined in the ADE Action Plan.

Road Map to Eliminate HAI: 2013 Action Plan Conference

September 25 – 26, 2013 in Washington, D.C.

This conference brought together HAI subject matter experts, public health professionals, clinicians, patient safety advocates, and consumers to review progress and discuss the next steps for implementing the National Action Plan to Prevent Health Care-Associated Infections.

Progress Toward Eliminating Health Care-Associated Infections Meeting

November 27, 2012 in Washington, D.C.

At this meeting, HAI subject matter experts gathered to review and discuss how to accelerate progress toward achieving the five-year national HAI prevention targets for reducing the incidence of specific HAIs that were established in the HAI Action Plan.

Health Care-Associated Infections Data Summit

May 30 – 31, 2012 in Kansas City, MO

This summit was an opportunity for public and private sector HAI prevention partners to review existing data sources and to make recommendations for adding efficiencies and enhancing the value of the supply chain of HAI data.

HAI Action Plan Stakeholder Call

April 19, 2012 in Washington, DC

Leaders from HHS directed this stakeholder call during the public comment period for the revised HAI Action Plan. Speakers provided updates on revisions to the original Action Plan as well as data showing marked progress in the reduction of HAIs since the initial Action Plan release in 2009.

State-Level Partners Collaborating to Eliminate Health Care-Associated Infections

September 15 – 16, 2011 in Dallas/Fort Worth, TX

This meeting promoted collaboration, information sharing, and strategic alignment of programs and resources across state-level entities working to eliminate HAIs.

Focus Group on Essential Components for State HAI Efforts

September 14, 2011 in Dallas/Fort Worth, TX

During this half-day focus group, participants from the federal government, states, national stakeholders, professional organizations, consumers, payers, and providers developed a prioritized list of thematic components to be discussed at the State-Level Partners Collaborating to Eliminate Health Care-Associated Infections meeting (see above).

Healthy People 2020: Health Care-Associated Infections Webinar

August 16, 2011

This webinar highlighted the importance of HAI as a public health issue, provided an overview of the related Healthy People 2020 objectives, and laid out action steps that health care and public health professionals can take to prevent HAIs.

Dr. Don Wright, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health, gave 2 presentations during the 2011 AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting.

Health Care Quality Innovation Summit

May 11 – 13, 2011 in Cleveland, Ohio

During this summit, Dr. Wright presented at a session called “Defining Quality in Health Care” along with representatives from the National Quality Forum, Consumers Advancing Patient Safety, and USA Today.

HAI Recovery Act Grantee Meeting

October 2010 in Atlanta, Georgia

This meeting addressed HAI prevention at the state and regional level, and included state HAI coordinators from all 50 states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico, along with representatives from federal agencies, academic institutions and professional organizations.

Public Health Collaboration Models for Infection Prevention in Licensed Health Care Settings

October 20, 2010 in Atlanta, GA

The focus of this meeting was HAI prevention needs and ongoing activities in ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) The meeting identified novel approaches and best practices for collaboration regarding the promotion of infection control training and HAI prevention, surveillance, and oversight activities in ASCs and other licensed health care settings.
