The Department of Health is a multifaceted state agency with broad-ranging public health responsibilities. The vision statement of the Department of Health is for all people in Rhode Island to have the opportunity to live a safe and healthy life in a safe and healthy community. The mission of the department is to prevent disease and to protect and promote the health and safety of the people of Rhode Island. The Department's programs include: Central Management, Office of the State Medical Examiner, Family Health, Health Services Regulation, Environmental Health, Health Laboratories, Disease Prevention and Control, and Substance Abuse. An automated database contains files on vital statistics, health manpower, health facilities, hospital utilization, ambulatory and long-term care, health interview surveys, population, aggregate health expenditures, and statewide cancer information.
