The Academy, formed in 1964 by the merger of two plastic surgery associations, is a medical society for surgeons who perform plastic and reconstructive surgery on the head, face, and neck. The Academy's purpose is to stimulate research and scientific advancement in plastic surgery and to expand the knowledge and skills of specialty plastic surgeons of the head and neck region.

The Academy publishes pamphlets and videotapes on facial plastic surgery and specific procedures, such as facelifts, nasal surgery, and treatment of hair loss.
